Imrana Buba won the 2024 Cedric Smith Prize for his article Civilian Protection Payment and the Escalation of Violence against Civilians in Northwestern Nigeria, which is part of his PhD dissertation at the University of Oslo and within the ResilienceBuilding project.

The Cedric Smith Prize is awarded each year by the Conflict Research Society for the best piece of peace and conflict research (broadly defined) by a PhD candidate or someone having recently passed their PhD defense.

The project team organised a workshop on “New Research on Conflict Complexity and Political Violence” with colleagues from Uni Oslo, PRIO, UCL, and Oxford. Presentations covered issues such as climate change and conflict, vigilante violence and order, trends in communal violence, and rebel targeting choices.

The workshop was followed by a Keynote by Stathis Kalyvas (Oxford) on his new book project “Violent Political Conflict” for the 2024 Oslo Peace and Conflict Lecture.

Jana Krause delivered a Keynote on Women’s Participation in Peace Processes at the UN High-Level Seminar on Gender and Inclusive Mediation Strategies held in Porvoo, Finland (9-11 May 2023), organized by CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation and Peace Research Institute Oslo.

Jana Krause and Kathleen Klaus held a two-day workshop for survey enumerators in Nairobi (June 2022) for a study on communal conflict, election violence, and local peacebuilding in Kenya.
