Dr. Melanie Sauter is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oslo and part of the ResilienceBuilding project. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence and was a member of the doctoral school of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and a global fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. Her academic interests are within the realm of peace and conflict studies. More specifically, she focus on micro-dynamics of political violence and the subsequent role of humanitarian organizations and peacekeepers in armed conflicts. Methodologically, she combines causal modeling of spatial conflict event data with qualitative methods, such as fieldwork interviews and process tracing. Her research has been published in the Journal of Peace Research, International Peacekeeping, International Studies Quarterly, and the International Journal of Development and Conflict, and she is currently working on a book manuscript based on her dissertation.
Melanie worked as a Protection of Civilians Officer at the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), on Child Protection issues with local NGOs in Ethiopia and Ghana, the UN Secretariat in New York, and as a media designer. Melanie holds an MA in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Oslo and a BA in Political Science, Law and Islamic Studies from the University of Zurich.
